Statement on the Louisiana V. Callais decision

April 29, 2026

Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King released the following statement on the Supreme Court Louisiana V. Callais decision

Arndrea and I are deeply troubled by today’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais. With this decision, the Supreme Court has further weakened the Voting Rights Act, the crown jewel of the Civil Rights Movement.

This is not simply a legal setback, but a moral indictment that reflects a continued retreat from the promise of equal justice. This decision silences the voices of millions of voters of color by undermining the purpose of the VRA – securing and protecting the political rights of Black and Brown communities across the country.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. understood that voting rights are the foundation of our entire democratic system. Without them, we are a democracy in name only. While future courts may address this ruling, the damage is immediate, and this moment demands that we choose whether to accept the erosion of our democracy or stand together to defend it.
