Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King, and Yolanda Renee King released the following statement on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2026
As we observe the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, we do so at a pivotal moment in our nation’s life-two hundred and fifty years since America’s founding. This milestone invites reflection as much as remembrance. Our democratic promise remains unfinished, calling each generation to decide how those founding ideals will be lived.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. showed us that one life, rooted in courage, compassion, and moral clarity, can move a nation toward justice. His legacy affirms that faith, nonviolence, and unconditional love are not passive virtues, but powerful forces for change.
Today, his message speaks with renewed urgency. Democracy is not self-sustaining; it requires participation, vigilance, and a steadfast commitment to justice. Dr. King challenged us to confront racism, inequality, and division not with despair or violence, but with truth, courage, and love.
He also reminded us that peace is not weakness-peace is strength. It is disciplined and demanding, calling us to choose unity over division and love over fear. Too often, we profess belief in love while practicing separation and conflict. The work before us is to close that gap between our ideals and our actions.
As we enter this historic chapter, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by rejecting cynicism and moral surrender. We choose audacious faith in our shared humanity and recommit ourselves to the unfinished work of building a nation defined by dignity, opportunity, justice, and peace.
With abiding faith in America, and an audacious faith in the future of humanity, we move forward-together.”
