Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King released the following statement on the proposed ceasefire between Israel and Hamas:
Today, on my father’s 96th birthday, Israel and Hamas have agreed to halt their brutal war and finally come to the table to seek long-lasting peace. Since the atrocities of October 7, the Middle East has been engulfed in a destabilizing, horrific war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians–mostly women and children–and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.
As we’ve said since October 7, peace is the only solution, peace that transcends national borders and cultures. My father spent his life advancing peace, justice, and equity – peace from war, justice for all, and equity for the least of these.
We pray that both parties agree to a permanent ceasefire, that every hostage is released, and that peace prevails.
